Stoner Etiquette: 10 things you should know

STONER ETIQUETTE: 10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

When it comes to smoking weed rules are not something that would first come to mind for most stoners. The very act of consuming cannabis in many parts of the country is illegal and we all turn a blind eye to that rule, so why the heck would we be bothered with any other rules? Depending on who you smoke with and where; you and your collection of friends may have a set of guidelines (sometimes unspoken, but you know) when it comes to getting high.
Being polite and respectful in any social setting is a must and stoners should be expected to act no different. Often times these guidelines are referred to as smoking etiquette by marijuana users and are just an extension of being respectful with a few friendly reminders and ‘tips’ mixed in. We all know how forgetful we can be at times. Especially after a big bowl of that dank.
For those rookie tokers maybe unsure of what some of the “rules” are when it comes to lighting up in a lot of smoking circles out there in the merry world of weed we’ve taken the liberty of compiling what we think are ten (10) of the most popular smoking etiquette guidelines/tips all stoners should know:

  • Roller’s Rights – Whoever twisted up that plane is the pilot of this flight. It’s only right that whoever took the time to just craft the joint or blunt you’re about to enjoy should be the one to light it and have the first hit. If you’re using a bong or pipe instead, let the host or owner of the piece get first dibs.
  • Ash then Pass – Always ash the joint/blunt before passing it to the next person in the rotation. Make sure if you’re using a pipe or bong to cash (completely finish and remove the ash) it if the bowl is nearly finished. Don’t leave a bowl of ash for the next person, you wouldn’t like that.
  • ‘Corner’ Your Bowl – When hitting a bowl try and hold the lighter towards the edge of the bowl and at a slight distance and just inhale. The flame should barely touch the weed and as soon as it’s lit you can put the lighter away. Don’t torch the whole bowl!
  • Puff, Puff, Pass – Everyone wants to hit it so keep it moving through rotation and don’t go hogging it all. Sometimes it could be a hit and pass kind of thing if it’s a bong, so just pay attention and do as the Roma…  err, stoners do.
  • Pitchin’ In – Nobody likes a mooch. Trust me, even if your friends don’t say anything about it they are just being nice and sharing ‘cause that’s the stoner way. Keep things fair and throw in your fair share. A little short for cash? Just make up for it next time, everyone will appreciate it.
  • It’s a Bong, Not a Microphone! – Some people like to rant talk a lot, and that’s fine. Heck, that’s when you get those truly epic and memorable conversations anyhow, but please, save it for when you aren’t holding the bong or joint. We’re all waiting here.
  • Don’t Kill My Buzz, Man – We can talk about anything you want, from philosophy to food. Even unicorns if you want, for the extra high folk. Anything can be fair game but try and keep it to topics that won’t kill a buzz. Nobody wants to hear anything to do with police when they’re high.
  • Be Prepared – Show up with what you’re going to need to get the job done, so to speak. Maybe consider a ‘kit’ that includes your bud, a grinder, a piece or some papers, and anything else you may need. It’s better to be safe than sorry, as the old adage goes.
  • Keep it Clean – Cleanliness is important when it comes to smoking marijuana as to not promote any kind of contamination. Be sure to keep your pipe or bong clean and free of resin build-up and you will find you can actually enjoy the taste of weed sans resin taste in your mouth. If your preferred method of smoking is joints or blunts just please refrain from slobbing all over it, it’s not a lollypop.
  • Get Baked – Not to be forgotten is probably the most obvious, but most important thing you need to remember when it comes to any session: just get good and stoned and enjoy yourself. Why get high and mixed up in too many formalities? Just pack another bowl.
